Research, Audit, and Review

Improving Outcomes

The overall increase in the numbers of children subject to a child protection plan, or who are accommodated, has been placing major pressures on the workload of practitioners and also budgets.

An extension of the Results Based Accountability (RBA) approach can be very effective in improving outcomes within existing budgetary constraints.

Methodology:

  • Systematic analysis of the data and cross referencing against data drawn from comparator authorities.
  • Consideration of the ‘underlying story’ and development of causal factor diagrams
  • Consultation workshops with practitioners, managers and where appropriate other agency groupings
  • Audit/case review in the light of the data analysis and causal issues
  • Service plan development and the identification of linked performance indicators.

Where the full range of work outlined above is not required, we are happy to discuss discrete elements and have undertaken audit/reviews of children becoming looked after, and the operation of child protection systems.

Serious Case Reviews & Domestic Homicide reviews

Given the time and effort entailed in these reviews, there are three aspects that are essential:

  • For the situation that resulted in the review, and the provision of services by agencies, to be understood within its full system context.
  • As much emphasis to be placed on why things happened and the underlying factors, as on what happened.
  • For effective plans to be made to integrate any lessons and learning into the day to day practice of agencies.

We undertake work on Individual Management Reviews, Overview reports and Panel Chairmanship.
