Information Systems and Social Work Processes

Streamlining, reducing practitioner load and deriving more benefit from systems

The early promise of computerised social work information systems has often not been realised and, this together with the demand for performance data, has frequently resulted in practitioners tied to time consuming and unwieldy systems with inadequate time for working directly with service users.

Based on our experience in working with a number of different authorities, and different information systems, there is significant potential:

  • to streamline processes
  • reduce computer input and paper based forms
  • derive greater benefit from the investment in IT systems
  • free up practitioner time

Approach:

1. Defining the intended outcomes of a given approach or process

2. Identifying the indicators that demonstrate the outcome has been achieved

3. Walking the processes through and clarifying the information requirements and information flows

4. Analysing the interface between the social work process and the IT system

5. Consulting with practitioners, managers and administrative staff

6. Re-designing processes and the supporting paper and electronic forms

7. Training in the revised processes and supporting implementation

8. Reviewing post implementation and fine tuning
